How it works
- 01
Upload
CSV or OFX exports from any bank, or a text-based PDF statement. Bring every account you used during the year. Overlapping files are deduplicated, so the same expense is never counted twice.
- 02
Classify
Every charge is matched to a category that maps onto a tax form line, not a budgeting bucket. Rules resolve most of it identically on every run. Only the genuinely ambiguous rows reach a language model, and anything it cannot place is left for you rather than guessed.
- 03
Convert
Foreign transactions are re-costed at the official published rate for the day, from the Bank of Canada or the ECB. You also see what your bank's spread cost you against the mid-market rate.
- 04
Test
41 deduction, credit and election rules run against your situation. Each finding is priced by recomputing your whole return with and without it, so a deduction that sits under the standard deduction correctly shows as worth nothing.
- 05
Challenge
Every position is then handed to a model told to attack it the way an examiner would. It can raise the risk rating and lower confidence. It can never do the reverse. An optimiser with no opponent produces returns that are arguable and indefensible, and you are the one who carries that.

- What does tax.ing do?
- It reads your bank and credit card statements, works out what each charge was, and tests every deduction and credit rule that applies to you. It produces an analysis with the statute behind each finding, not a filed return.
- Which countries does it cover?
- The United States and Canada for tax year 2026: federal rules plus all 51 US states and the District of Columbia, and all 13 Canadian provinces and territories.
- Do I need to give it my bank login?
- No. You upload statement files yourself. There is no bank connection and nothing is written to disk.
- Is it a substitute for an accountant?
- No. It finds and prices deductions and shows you the authority for each one, which is the slow part of preparing a return. Have a qualified preparer review anything you intend to file.
- How does it handle foreign currency?
- Every foreign transaction is re-costed at the official rate for the day it happened, with weekends and holidays rolled back to the previous business day. Conversion methods are elected per class of transaction, because neither the IRS nor CRA lets you pick a different method for each one.
